Why the name "Die in a Fire?"
In November of 2008 I participated in a challenge, alongside several others, to see if we could post one blog entry per day. A few days in and I was already struggling, trying to think of things to write about. After a few days, I wrote a post entitled "The internet is in immediate danger of collapse" which talked about how we have deep interdependence among different web services and how that scares me.
I wrote that post late at night before going to bed, and when I woke up the next morning I was surprised to see that it had made the front page of http://programming.reddit.com/. So I started reading some of the comments.
That's when I saw it, a comment by a person named "king", which went a little something like this:
...but as more people do use S3 etc they will get more reliable--to the point where they consistently outperform shit hosting.
so basically you are fucking retarded
die in a fire
It made me laugh so hard I almost cried.
A few days later, playing poker, I was recounting the awesomeness of this comment, which everyone agreed was pretty much the best comment ever. We decided to look up http://www.dieinafire.com/, which only added to the hilarity of the comment. Finally, Leah Culver suggested that it would be the perfect name for a blog. I concurred and since I was in the middle of rewriting this blog anyway, it was the perfect chance to rename it to the awesomeness that is...
...Die in a Fire
