Example Digg/Reddit Comment Clone Plus Focus

Posted on Jan. 30, 2008 at 11:46 a.m.

In this example, the AJAX functionality of django-threadedcomments and django-voting are exhibited, along with some of the presentational eye-candy easily achieved with jQuery.

Focus is the concept that with so many different trains of thought, you might actually want to just follow one specific thread. Focusing on one comment means that you see that comment and all direct replies to that comment, and everything else just fades away.

The barrier for entry on this is about as low as it could be acceptably made: Click register, type in a username and password, and click Register. You will then be registered and logged in. No confirmation e-mail, no validation, etc. In fact, there's no place to even enter your e-mail address.

What?! Why does everyone always say hello to me, and then disappear when I respond? It's quite degrading, actually.

This really isn't a Digg or Reddit clone. It's similar, but it's different from both of them.

4

I know. I wanted to code something similar enough to those apps to display parity, but with some added features (like Focus) which would demonstrate flexibility in the stack to do something different.

similarly, a vote down then up ends up a net 1.

I realise reddit has the same behaviour, but I find it annoying :-)

I'm working on a fix now. Django-voting supports clearing of votes, but I just forgot to implement it in my Javascript. I'll post here when it's fixed :)

OK it's fixed! It's a bit of a hackjob, but it's fixed. Click on the gray arrow now to un-vote.
